Steel Windows

Steel was used extensively in the early 1900’s particularly SMW’s (standard metal windows) during the boom years of mass housing after the Great War. Esthetically pleasing (as the dimensions followed brick sizes) steel windows were very popular, simple to glaze with putty and protected from rusting with hot dipped galvanising and powder coating paint finishes.

With todays demands for energy conservation, single glazed, steel windows struggle to be as energy efficient as other materials. However no other material really achieves the elegance sight lines that original steel windows provide, steel windows are still available from a handful of specialist companies.
